How to Mould a Gumshield in 5 Simple Steps

Step 1: Preparation

Gather the equipment needed to mould the gumshield.

  • Heat-resistant mug or bowl

  • Large spoon

  • Kettle or pan to boil water

  • Timer

  • Gumshield

NB: Minors are to be constantly supervised by an adult.

Boil some water in a pan or kettle.

Once the water comes to the boil, please remove it from the heat and pour it into the heat-resistant mug or bowl.

Let it sit for 30 seconds to cool down a bit.  Water that is too hot can damage your gumshield.

Step 2: Preparing the Gumshield for Moulding

Set the timer for 40 seconds.

Submerge the gumshield in hot water for 40 seconds, fully covering it.

If you leave it in for too long, the material can become too soft, and the gumshield will shrivel up.

Once the time is up, carefully remove the gumshield from the water using a suitable utensil such as a spoon.

Check that the gumshield is pliable enough to mould to your teeth.  If not, put it back in the hot water for another ten seconds.

If you’re not having any success at this stage, we suggest starting again with freshly boiled water.

Step 3: Moulding the Gumshield to Your Teeth

Let the gumshield cool for a few seconds, but not too long, as the material will start to harden.

Then, carefully place the gumshield around your upper teeth, ensuring it covers them completely.

Bite down to create an impression of your teeth in the material, suck in to ensure a tight fit, and use your fingers to press the edges of the gumshield into your teeth and gums.  Continue this process for 30 seconds.

The gumshield should fit snugly without needing to bite or clench to hold it in place.

Step 4: Setting the Shape for the Perfect Fit

Once happy, remove the gumshield from your mouth and hold it under cold water for 60 seconds. This will help the material set and retain its shape.

Ensure the gumshield is completely cool before putting it back into your mouth.  If it is still too warm, it could distort the shape.

Step 5: Final Fit Checks

Check to see if the gumshield fits properly.

It should not fall out of your mouth and should feel comfortable. If it does not fit well or rubs against your teeth or gums, you must repeat the moulding process.

Once fitted correctly, Game Guard gumshields provide reliable protection that meets recognised safety standards. All Game Guard gumshields are UKCA & CE approved, giving parents, schools, and clubs confidence that they meet essential safety and quality requirements for sports use.

Common Gumshield Fitting Mistakes to Avoid

1. Overheating the Gumshield

Leaving the gumshield in boiling water for too long can cause it to become too soft, leading to distortion or damage. Always stick to the recommended 40 seconds to maintain the material’s protective properties.

2. Biting Down Too Hard

Biting down too firmly can thin the material, reducing protection around the teeth and jaw. Apply gentle, even pressure to achieve a secure fit without compromising thickness.

3. Not Pressing the Gumshield Fully Around the Teeth

For a proper fit, the gumshield must be pressed closely around the teeth and gums using your fingers and tongue. This helps create a snug seal and improves comfort and protection.

4. Skipping the Cold-Water Setting Step

Cooling the gumshield under cold water allows the material to set correctly. Skipping this step can cause the gumshield to lose its shape, resulting in a poor fit.

Avoiding these common gumshield fitting mistakes helps ensure maximum comfort, protection, and long-term performance during sport.

The Benefits of a Properly Fitted Gumshield

A properly fitted gumshield offers better protection, comfort, and confidence during sport.

Once you’ve achieved the perfect fit, your gumshield will feel snug and comfortable, offering peace of mind during any game or practice.

Here’s why taking the time to fit it properly matters:

Enhanced Protection

A gumshield that fits well stays in place, protecting your teeth, gums, and jaw from impact during contact sports. Ill-fitting gumshields can shift, reducing their protective capabilities and leaving you vulnerable to injury. This increases the risk of sports dental injuries.

Comfort for Consistent Use

A comfortable gumshield is one you’ll want to wear! Custom-fit boil & bite gumshields feel natural in the mouth, meaning players are more likely to use them consistently during sports, keeping them protected at all times.

Better Performance on the Field

With a gumshield that fits perfectly, you’ll worry less about adjusting it during the game, allowing you to focus on your performance. Confidence comes with knowing you’re fully protected.

Achieving the perfect fit for your boil-and-bite gumshield is easy if you follow these 5 simple steps carefully. By taking the time to mould your gumshield properly, you’re investing in both comfort and protection. Avoid the common mistakes, and you’ll have a gumshield that provides maximum safety and peace of mind, letting you focus on what matters most enjoying your game!

Once your gumshield is fitted correctly, learning how to care for your gumshield properly will help maintain hygiene, comfort, and long-term protection throughout the season.
